I recommend this to many music lovers who like piano solo performance and also Beethoven's symphonies.
This must especially be good choice for those who already have a number of complete symphonies sets and still sometimes looks for a new set.

5.0 Katsaris -- a true piano giant!

I need not go too much into detail about how fantastic Liszt's transcriptions are -- they are extremely faithful to the source material and with Katsaris' playing on a modern piano, we see Liszt's vision of pushing the boundaries of the piano perfectly realized. There are too many good things to say about these recordings. To name a few, I find Katsaris' tone to be the most appropriate among all the sets I've heard -- the most 'orchestral' so to speak (whereas Scherbakov or Biret occasionally sound way too dry, percussive, and underpowered). Each musical line seems to blend together perfectly without losing clarity in the voicing or the quality of the instrument that the piano is trying to imitate. Katsaris' talent for mimicking the instruments of the orchestra is astounding. Beautiful voicing, perfect phrasing, these recordings have it all.

BUT... this would not be a fair review if I did not mention Katsaris' knack for some controversial interpretive decisions. He occasionally takes liberties with the score, changing or adding small details or even entire passages. I personally take no issue with this. For the most part, these changes are very very tasteful and are by no means for show or flair. It's clear he thought them through and I find that they pay great respect to the source material. However, if what you want is Liszt's writing all the way through, this set is not for you. Still, I highly recommend giving this a listen as well.

1.0 Not liszt ....its wayward Katsaris!

This pianistic mess would be better called the Katsaris Liszt transcriptions instead of Liszt's... as these are constantly violating his intentions, and this without any use,as if liszt didn't know beter , the disgusting fatening of chords.. playing octaves lower and higher when not asked for ! adding a myriad of notes between textures its to much a thing, fortunately there is sherbakov or Howard instead !!!!

I have been listening to these CDs alongside Georg Solti's Chicago Symphony Orchestra recordings as well as Simon Rattle's spectacular 2015 Berlin Philharmonic Blu-ray/CD
presentation and, therefore, have enjoyed a prolonged Beethoven fest; aptly so, during the 250th anniversary year of the composer's birth and it has been a welcome distraction from the interminable Lockdown period. I am a huge Beethoven fan, and my connection and devotion to his life and music has been a presence since my teenage years.
What we have here, then, is a recording of all 9 Beethoven Symphonies in the transcriptions for piano solo by Franz Liszt. Therein lies a natural progression, musically speaking, as Carl Czerny was a pupil of Beethoven and Franz Liszt was a pupil of Czerny's. I have played other transcriptions of the 9 symphonies, but wanted to sample these.
Of course, transcriptions for piano and organ of orchestral music was a very popular - and money-making - way of bringing such music to a wider audience; particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries at a time when it wasn't as accessible as it is for us nowadays with an abundance of concert performances and recordings. They also provide an invaluable and domestic way of studying such music; giving an opportunity to hear the compositions with much greater clarity of melodic line and harmonic structure. I will not provide a detailed analytical thesis of each movement and the player's interpretations, suffice to say that the playing is, on the whole, excellent. Katsaris is well up to the challenge that each of the transcribed symphonies require; the sound is big and, in my opinion, he provides each movement with the sonority that this music requires. I haven't heard the other recordings of these transcriptions, other reviewers have obviously done so, but, these must be the best.
A few minor observations would include the need for a bit more reflection in the playing and phrasing of the slow movement of the 9th Symphony - its first movement sounds like one of Liszt's own Symphonic Poems at times - which was lacking. The absence of vocal soloists and choir are obviously missed. I found the 7th (the first Beethoven symphony I got to know as a teenage horn player) annoying. It sounded like a 'bangfest', as it is full of such hugely repetitive chordal writing. There seemed little evidence of any tonal contrast throughout this version. Beethoven's melodies were, essentially, borne out of a huge chordal framework, and great care must be maintained in allowing his wonderful melodies to predominate above this framework and not to be engulfed by it. Small criticism, though, as these transcriptions are a mammoth undertaking for any pianist - amateur or professional - and having heard Katsaris's performances of these, for me, hitherto unknown transcriptions, it has made me interested in buying the sheet music and examine the 'dots' for myself.
In concluding then, I am glad I bought these recordings of music that lives in my being as if I had composed it myself, and would recommend them enthusiastically to anyone who wants to further their knowledge and appreciation of Beethoven's Symphonies. We need his music more at the present time and I would just say.... buy them and enjoy the trip.
